About Us
How we came about
The California RedTails were started by a few pilots who wanted to fly more and belong to a national organization. The first meeting was held at the Southern California hangar of Ron Lisberg (late Chapter President Emeritus) and a telephone link setup for the members in the San Francisco Bay area to join in.
Temporary officers were assigned during that meeting and a commitment was made for the next meeting to agree upon a formal organization name, colors, mission statement and draft By-Laws.
During that follow-on meeting the name California RedTails was chosen from a long list of possibilities. Our colors, black and gold, were agreed upon and the first slate of term-specific officers were elected. Additionally during this second meeting a logo and jacket were designed and uniform standards were set.

Who we are
The California RedTails are aviation enthusiasts from varied walks of life with similar, and yet diverse, interests in general aviation, aircraft operation, ownership, construction, restoration, maintenance, flight training and safety.
We are committed to honoring the legacy of the famed Tuskegee Airmen 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces. Many of our members have flown to the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and also supported the Friends of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, Incorporated.
As a chapter of the Black Pilots of America, Incorporated we are part of a nationwide effort to educate youth, stimulate and encourage aviation opportunities. Within our area of operations we specifically serve as aviation ambassadors throughout California to promote learning to fly and perhaps achieving aircraft ownership.

What we do
We Fly. The California RedTails are committed to aviation and its use to serve our community, cities and counties throughout California. RedTails are members of the Angel Flight, Civil Air Patrol, EAA Young Eagles, Los Medicos Voladores and regional flying organizations. Additionally many of our members utilize aircraft as a business tool to gain competitive advantages.
Given the utility and capability of general aviation aircraft we always set aside time to hone our hard earned skills via collective and independent training as well as meeting for the comradery of shared experiences.

Why we fly
Each RedTail has their reason. For some it's fulfillment of a life long dream. For others it is the challenge of developing a psychokinetic skill set that few will attain. Some of our members view flying as a way to help others, while some will tell you it is the mere practicality of travel on their own terms. And yet for others its simply the solace of slipping the surly bonds.
Regardless of the rationale the California RedTails are committed to the sound maintenance of our aircraft, safe operating principles and honoring the legacy of those who flew before us.
